The scale of some of these London Underground projects are quite astounding – my head is still reeling from trying to make out the 3-D plans for the Victoria station upgrade:

<a href="http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/corporate/vsu-current-proposals-aug-08.pdf" rel="nofollow">Victoria Station Upgrade - 3D Aerial View</a> (PDF).

Just this one underground station is expected to go from 80 million users per year (which already leads to temporary closures during peak hours due to congestion) to 100 million in less than a decade from now.

And the Tottenham Court Road modernisation is desperately needed, even without the expected influx from Crossrail (I can’t wait for that, though the Hackney-Chelsea line would have been more of a blessing for me personally).

It is always confusing why should a very very rich country like the US should find its public transportation network deteriorating. and not only that, as someone who is much more familiar with public transpotation system in Europe, i was shocked to find out that the US doesn't even have a proper HSR line!
But after seeing this site and reading all the proposals US cities are planning, i feel optimistic that one day The US will finally have all the right rail infrastructure on par with Europe.
speed surely is the key, as big US cities are relatively more distant to each other compared to the big cities in Europe.
Still, if Spain can have a HSR service with AVERAGE speed of 250 kph betwee Madrid and Barcelona NOW, surely it will be possible in not so distant future for the US to have an average 300 kph system linking New York with Boston, Montreal,Chicago and Atlanta.
