I'm not sure I would agree that Oakland is "lucky" it got the stimulus funds. Without those funds, BART would have been forced to go back to the drawing board and we likely would have ended up with an excellent BRT system for a tenth of the price.

But this fight is not over yet, as local transit advocates are committed to stopping this wasteful project and redirecting funds to BART (for other projects) and other transit agencies that sorely need it right now.

Ok, I doubt that you know what is going on in Miami-Dade County, what the residents were promised, and how that half-penny surtax is being utlized. The government lied to its people, and that action can never be allowed to stand. So, I understand that you are transit-centric, but, this is really an issue of government efficiency and honesty!

Please Visit Switching Modes for a <a HREF="http://switchingmodes.com/2009/05/14/capital-costs-vs-operational-costs-the-general-state-of-misdirected-anger/" rel="nofollow">DIFFERENT TAKE</A> on the Oakland Airport Connector.

I think this project is a good thing. It was discounted with Federal Stimulus dollars. The existing bus is deplorable. We can do better. Not a just a little better, a lot better. This is the way to achieve it. When you consider how much a new parking garage costs, how much a new terminal costs... $500 million is reasonable.

LRT is great. But it is not appropriate in this case. It wouldn't have resolved the problem because it wouldn't be grade separated.
