Fortunately for Charlotte, we dodged this additional tax burden. Just tonight it's being reported that the extra half cent tax increase will not be available to Charlotte.

Excelent news, as our state government just passed a budget including a 1 cent sales tax hike for the entire state and started a tax surcharge on people making as little as $60k per year. A tax surcharge i slitterally a tax on your taxes!

More trains here in Charlotte are near the bottom of the list of priorities.

After decades of trying to get secure funds for transitway capital in the Twin Cities, we passed a bill in 2008 allowing 7 metropolitan counties to raise the sales tax by 1/4 cent, and 5 of the counties, accounting for 95% of the potential revenue, passed it. This bill was tied into an 8 1/2 cent gas tax increase that Minnesota Ayatollah/Governor Tim Pawlenty fervently opposed, even after we had a fucking bridge collapse. 6 Republicans voted in favor, and 4 lost nomination or re-election.

Does anyone know much about how North Carolina Republicans feel about this? Will they fight any tax increases for something as sensible as passenger rail? Or are they as ass-backwards as most Minnesota Republicans.
