Notes related to data: Vehicle revenue miles (VRM) represent miles traveled by transit vehicles while in revenue service during a rolling 12-month period ending {{ latestPeriod }}. Ridership figures represent unlinked passenger trips (UPT) during a rolling 12-month period ending {{ latestRidershipPeriod }}. Data are reported by urbanized area as defined by the US Census Bureau. Per capita figures use urbanized area population estimates from the National Transit Database. Fiscal year operating expenses and ridership figures in the scatter plot are drawn primarily from fiscal year 2024, though the most recent available year varies by agency. Per transit ride figures divide funds expended by unlinked passenger trips over the rolling twelve months ending December 2024. Point size in the scatter plots is proportional to urban area population. The federal versus other funding chart plots federal funds against the sum of fares, transit agency taxes, and local and state funds, on logarithmic axes.
